There are runs, and then there are runs. In 2023, Lil Yachty put together a stretch of singles that deserves way more credit than it gets. This wasn’t a rapper riding one sound or chasing a moment. This was five different records, five different pockets, and Yachty sounding completely in control of all of it. Looking back, it’s the kind of run that ages into legend status. “Strike (Holster)” — April 7, 2023
This is where the run kicks off, and it hits with pure aggression right out the gate. “Strike (Holster)” is sharp, direct, and hits harder than almost anything else he dropped that year. There’s no ambiguity here, no experimenting. It’s Yachty setting the tone early, letting everybody know what kind of year this was going to be.
“Slide” — August 4, 2023
Months later, “Slide” shows up as pure control. This is Yachty moving a room without needing a viral moment or a TikTok trend to do it. The pocket is smooth, the delivery is relaxed but locked in, and the whole record just glides the way the title promises. It’s proof that he doesn’t need to force anything to make a song hit.
“Solo Steppin Crete Boy” — August 4, 2023
Dropped the same day as “Slide,” this is the chaos to its control. There’s a grimier, more unhinged version of Yachty on this one, a version that sounds like he stopped caring what anybody expected from him and just went. The energy is reckless in the best way. It’s not polished, it’s not safe, and that’s exactly the point.
“Tesla” — August 25, 2023
“Tesla” is where the run gets futuristic. The production has that sleek, high-speed feel, and Yachty rides it like he’s been waiting for a beat this clean. There’s a confidence here that only comes from an artist who knows exactly what lane he’s in. This is the record that makes you sit up and realize the run isn’t a fluke.
“The Secret Recipe” — September 28, 2023
This is Yachty at his weirdest, and that’s a compliment. “The Secret Recipe” leans all the way into the strange, off-kilter tendencies that made him stand out in the first place, and instead of feeling like a gimmick, it works. This is the record that closes out the run by taking the biggest swing of all of them, and it connects.
Five records. Five completely different energies. And somehow it all sounds like the same artist operating at the peak of his instincts. This is the run that gets talked about in five years, the one people point to and say that’s when it clicked. Generational is a big word. This run earns it.
