What started as a headline booking announcement ended with one of the UK’s biggest music festivals being shut down entirely.

Ye was announced on March 30 as the headliner for all three nights of Wireless Festival, set to take place at London’s Finsbury Park in July. The backlash was almost immediate.

The controversy stems from Ye’s well-documented history of antisemitic remarks and actions over recent years, including releasing a song titled “Heil H*tler” and selling T-shirts featuring sw*stikas, among numerous other incidents. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the booking “deeply concerning,” citing Ye’s previous antisemitic remarks and celebration of N*zism.

The sponsors didn’t hesitate. Pepsi withdrew from its decade plus co-branding with Wireless, followed by Diageo, owner of Johnnie Walker and Captain Morgan. By Monday, Rockstar Energy had also pulled its sponsorship, and PayPal announced it would no longer allow its branding to be associated with the event.

Festival organizer Melvin Benn of Festival Republic initially stood by the decision, defending the booking and asking the public to “offer some forgiveness and hope.” Variety

On Ye’s end, he had published a full-page apology in the Wall Street Journal in January, acknowledging his past behavior and stating he had been getting treatment after suffering a prolonged manic episode. Then on April 7, he addressed the Wireless controversy directly, saying he would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with members of the Jewish community in the UK in person to listen and apologize again. The Board of Deputies of British Jews responded that genuine remorse would need to be demonstrated before any such meeting took place.

It wasn’t enough. The UK Home Office withdrew Ye’s Electronic Travel Authorization, denying him entry into the country, and Wireless Festival was cancelled with full refunds issued to all ticket holders.

The internet has been vocal ever since, with debates split between accountability and the idea of second chances. Whether Ye’s apologies reflect genuine change or are part of a calculated comeback strategy is a question people are still very much arguing over.
